US vs. UK vs. Metric: What's the Difference?
A "cup" or "tablespoon" isn't the same size everywhere. US measuring cups and spoons are noticeably smaller than the metric ones used in the UK, Australia, and most of the rest of the world โ a US cup is about 236.6 mL, while the metric cup used in UK and Australian recipes is a rounder 250 mL. The gap is even bigger for tablespoons: Australia's tablespoon is a full 20 mL, a third larger than the US tablespoon's 14.8 mL. Teaspoons are the one exception โ the US teaspoon (4.93 mL) and the modern UK/metric teaspoon (5 mL) are close enough that most recipes treat them as interchangeable.

A Note on Dry Ingredients
All the conversions above are for volume โ they work perfectly for liquids, but dry ingredients like flour or sugar don't weigh the same per cup as water does, and how tightly they're packed changes the result too. For anything where precision actually matters (most baking), weighing dry ingredients on a kitchen scale is more reliable than a volume conversion. The Weight Converter handles grams, ounces and pounds if you need to go the other way.
